The Power Fade: 2024 Wells Fargo Championship

The Approach to fading big names for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship

What’s going on TJ Nation! Ann Arbor's Own Good Ol' AK Allen Klutts here bringing you another edition of the Power Fade: The Fades 8K and Above You Need to Smash Your DraftKings GPP's!

Major Season is about to kick off in a big way and we have one stop left on the road to the PGA Championship. Charolette, NC and Quail Hollow play host to 69 players in this signature event.

Quail Hollow plays as a Par 71, 7,500 yards. Holes 16-18, affectionately known as the "Green Mile" play as three of the toughest closing holes on the PGA TOUR.

Traditionally, Quail Hollow has produced a winning score hovering around -12 to -14. Wyndham Clark won at -19 under par last year but that seems to be the scoring outlier.

As we march our way to Valhalla next week for the PGA Championship, let us first take a look at who we should be fading for the Wells Fargo Championship this week. Bring on the Power Fades!

Rory McIlroy ($11,800)

Our First Power Fade of the week is coming off of a win (Albeit a team event) in his last outing. Rory McIlroy is our first Power Fade of the week at $11,800 on DraftKings.

Why The Fade Works:

When it comes to taming Quail Hollow, you would be hard pressed to find someone better than Rory McIlroy. Even with the high price tag, course history buffs will be all over the Irishman this week. The stats however point us in a different direction.

When you delve into the stats, Rory isn't that same guy or "Him" as the kids say nowadays.

McIlroy comes into this week ranking 46th in Approach from 175-200 yards. Couple this with ranking 43rd Strokes Gained Around the Green and you start to wonder why is Rory the highest priced player in the field.

Paying $11,800 for someone who struggles to put 4 rounds together is puzzling to me. At this price, we are paying a Rory tax, and I for one think we have better options down the board.

Fading Rory give us the opportunity to build our lineups with Xander, Wyndham Clark and Cantlay. I would wager that all three of these players not only out place Rory outright, but also outscore in net DraftKings points.

Max Homa ($9,400)

Our second Power Fade of the week is another name who the course history buffs will love. Max Homa is our second Power Fade of the week at $9,400.

Why The Fade Works:

Max Homa is an interesting case. He came into Augusta playing mediocre, and then had a real chance to wear the Green Jacket. We come to Quail Hollow, a place he loves, and you would think it is time to lock Max Homa. The numbers however point to a different story.

When it comes to Strokes Gained Off the Tee, Homa has been struggling. Ranking 60th in the field, we have a situation that leaves alot to be desired.

Furthermore, when you look at the key Approach range of 175-200 yards, Homa also has his struggles. Ranking 63rd in Approach 175-200 yards makes you wonder if Homa will be able to pay off his price tag this week. I think the prudent play is fade off the ownership and pivot down the board.

That's it folks for this week's edition of the Power Fade! We will be returning to you next week for the second Major of the season, The PGA Championship!
