David Versus Goliath

Last weekend in pro sports, the NFL created a David versus Goliath narrative. Across each game of the divisional playoffs, excitement unfolded until the final play. Literally. Now, golf plays the role of David in this metaphor as The American Express and other events struggled to attract viewers. However, within this underdog story, key players across all golf tours offered “won-liners” even mopey Packers fans could enjoy!

Akshay Bhatia Will Never Forget His First

After triumphing at the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, Akshay Bhatia, the nineteen-year-old from Los Angeles, quickly reminded us just how old he really is. Bhatia mentioned in his post-round interview, “We were at Sandals Resort where the golf course was and we got a comped room there which was amazing.” This atrocious one-liner came soon after he forgot the name of the tournament itself. Nevertheless, the young champ expanded upon this win and the position he finds himself in as the season begins. With a win under his belt, Akshay aims to reach number 1 on the Korn Ferry top 25 with hopes of securing his PGA Tour card soon.

Year Of The Dawg

Speaking of the PGA Tour, Hudson Swafford captured his third victory after winning The American Express out in California. The UGA alum caught fire in the fourth round as he carded an eight-under 64. With his son in attendance, Swafford reflected on his late father in his post-round interview. Swafford stated “He taught me everything I know. How to be a dad, how to be a champion and how to play golf.” Clearly, the veteran made his father proud with a composed win rooted in the integrity of the game. For the three-time winner, this victory continues to validate the work he puts in. Though as he looks forward, bigger opportunities must be on the rise, including making the cut at a major for the first time.

Rahmbo Explodes Mid-Round

And last but not least, Jon Rahm offered us the spiciest one-liner about The American Express during Saturday’s third round. Known for his hot temper, the Spaniard was caught on camera uttering rather crude words about the event. Rahm venting to himself, “Piece of s***, f****** setup, putting contest week.” Now, Rahm did not use his inside voice when explaining his feelings. Spectators around him laughed and gasped as the number 1 player in the World cursed the course and marched on. Why didn't he say these things in Spanish? Moving forward, I hope we continue to enjoy an intimate view into the fiery competitive side of Jon Rahm and less conversation about his clubfoot!

Let's Hope The Takes Continue!

Perhaps the PGA Tour should rethink the American Express. While multiple courses might provide variety for players, they facilitate a viewing disaster. Thankfully, Bhatia, Swafford, and Rahm provided three vastly different quotes that made people want to check in on the tour. As social media regulars, we took all three and ran with them, just like Dak to end the Cowboys season. In the end, though, I think I speak for all of us who wish nothing but the best for Akshay Bhatia and his new sidepiece caddie. Akshay will never forget his first win especially after celebrations spent in a comped cabana! Cheers!
