Portugal Masters 2020

The Course

The Dom Pedro Victoria Course at Vilamoura is best known for its low scoring and will serve as a welcome break after the last couple of challenging weeks, in particular the grind that just took place at Valderrama.

This very typical resort course located in one of Europe's most popular golfing holiday destinations, is designed to keep golf flowing and provide an enjoyable experience for all standards of the game.

This does mean that when the tour turn up here they tend to tear it to pieces. Two years ago Oliver Fisher recorded the European Tours first 59 and in 2014 Alex Levy recorded a 36 hole total of -18. Each year we experience low winning totals and even though there are plenty of reports of the rough being up and dense I still expect the course to be attacked and there to be a plethora of birdies and eagles.

Measuring 7,191 yards. This par 71, Arnold Palmer design layout sits on a flat, exposed plot and not too far from the Algarve coast. However there is a good reason this location is usually such a popular travel destination, and this is the reliable stunning weather that compliments the offering of gorgeous courses in the region.

7 holes have water featuring on them and over recent years there have been attempts to restrict long hitting and corner cutting by planting additional trees. However with this being a resort course the fairways are relatively wide and offer a good opportunity for all to have a good week finding the short grass and attack these undulating bent/poa greens, that should be running somewhere close 10.5ft on the stimp reading.

Key Stats

OFF THE TEE - The wide fairways do offer players the opportunity to open the shoulders and be aggressive of the tee, however bombing it doesn't necessarily result in success. Therefore I will be playing a mixture this week certainly and my focus will mainly be centered on creating scoring opportunities and converting them with solid skills on and around the green

IRON PLAY -  Hitting greens has proven to be on numerous occasions a key contributor towards successful weeks at this venue. Last week gave us a good insight into those producing good form with their iron play and its no surprise to see some of those that featured well last week featuring again this week.

PUTTING - Given the nature of the course and the calm weather this could very easily turn into a bit of a putting contest. Form with the short stick would definitely be a benefit here.
