I must admit until recent weeks I didn’t know too much about this venue. However I was fortunate to discover a couple of members of my club were once members at Lahinch before moving to England and they were very kind enough to give me the time and run me through the details of this fascinating venue.
Known as ‘The St. Andrews of Ireland’ and described I would say fairly as quirky. The Old Tom Morris, Old Course was first established in 1892, then redesigned by Dr. Allister MacKenzie in 1927 and far more recently tweaked by Martin Hawtree.
Very much a true links, situated on the West Coast of Ireland and overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean. Carved through towering sand dunes and as pure a playing surface that you could dream for.
Strategy and luck come in to the equation and players are in for a real treat and opportunity to test the creative and imaginative skills on a venue new to a large proportion of the field competing.
The biggest defence most links courses have is the changeable and challenging weather conditions. This week however, we have gorgeous settled weather.
The perfect opportunity to go low and attack the course.
No benefit to being on either side of the draw or an early or late tee time if dipping into the FRL market.
